For the beginning, it's best to fill your gauge with accurate hits. For the tick-stairs, try to step as if you're doing a half-step mash by hitting the side with one foot twice. If you can't do the side, it's a hold, so just hit it accurately. Once you get past the tick-stairs, you can handle the late spike however you like.
